Abstract We take a broad approach to thinking geographically, but a narrower view on the point at which thinking geographically is critically evaluated and assessed in our education system. The Scholarship Assessment Specification attracted our interest. The Scholarship is offered as the capstone assessment of a 3‐year Geography programme in New Zealand secondary education. We describe the institutions, actors and formats of Geography Scholarship. Our purpose is to promote thinking and scholarship as an integral part of the intellectual development of Geographers in contemporary education and beyond. Our concluding comments outline some of the options we think are available to Scholarship candidates and geography teachers.
