Cover Legend SEM of a section cut through an internode region of a Brachypodium distachyon stem. Like many grasses the stem is hollow with a central lacuna surrounded by a cortical region containing several rings of vascular bundles; the larger innermost bundles are surrounded by chlorenchyma cells, the smaller outer bundles are partially embedded in a sub‐epidermal sclerenchymatous sheath. Micrograph courtesy of Glenn Turner (Smertenko et al ., pp 1681–1695). Read more about our covers in the ‘Behind the cover’ blog: newphytologist.org/behind-the-cover .
