A close study of Sobralia dorbignyana Rchb. f. revealed that flowers of this species are red, not white as stated in the literature on the subject. We discovered that S. semperflorens Kraenzl., which is commonly treated as a synonym of S. dorbinyana , deserves the status of separate species. We also give a detailed description of S. sobralioides whose representatives are often misidentified as S. dorbignyana . The yellow‐flowered specimens occurring in Ecuador and Peru are described anew as S. flava s. nov. The new species differs from other taxa of this species complex by its larger and differently colored flowers, distinct labellum structure, narrower leaves, etc. Apart from detailed characteristics of all mentioned species, we present detailed drawings of their flowers and information concerning their distribution and ecology (Fig. 1–5). A determination key is also provided.
