The fungal endophyte Epichloë festucae forms a mutualistic symbiotic interaction with the grass plant, Lolium perenne . The fungal transcription factor ProA activates expression of SymB and SymC, which localize to the plasma membrane, septa and points of hyphal fusion, and are essential for establishment of the hyphal network in planta. For details see the article by Green et al . on pp. 657‐677 of this issue.
