BamA proteins are required for the folding and insertion of β‐barrel containing integral outer membrane proteins (OMPs). Despite their wide conservation, BamA orthologs function in a speciesspecific manner. Genetic studies of hybrid BamA proteins demonstrates that defects in hybrids containing orthologous POTRA domains can be rescued by compensatory mutations within the β‐barrel domain (highlighted residues). For details, see the article by Browning et al . on pp. 646–659 of this issue.
