When I began my short stint as Editor-in-Chief of Medical Education it was also at a time when I was moving to a new job. I asked my new employers if I could take 2 days a week to carry out the editorial role and they cordially agreed. Only later did I realise that they meant Saturday and Sunday! Despite this, the role itself was both a challenge and an education. The challenge came from reading all submitted manuscripts in order to make an initial decision and then re-reading them again with the referees’ reports to make the final decision. As we were receiving 1300 papers a year (between new submissions and revised copy), this meant that Saturday and Sunday were under a bit of pressure.
