The papers in this special issue are based on the Workshop on Volatiles in the Martian Interior, which was held at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in November 2014. The top panel shows the topography of the equatorial region of Mars, based on NASA Mars Global Surveyor data. The second panel is from Figure 1 within Breuer et al. (pp. 1959–1958). The top half of the second panel shows schematic diagrams of the initial water distribution after accretion and magma ocean crystallization for three different formation scenarios and the bottom half of the second panel shows possible present‐day water confi gurations on Mars. The bottom panel comes from Howarth et al. (pp. 2061–2072) and shows X‐ray compositional maps for apatites from the enriched, olivine‐phyric shergottite LAR 12011. Panel (a) shows a Ca X‐ray map of apatite, and panel (b) shows a Cl X‐ray map of the same apatite.
