This article presents the results of opinion polls conducted in Mexico since 2004, and of the Critical Discourse Analysis conducted on the most‐representative opinion articles of Mexican public intellectuals since 2000. The central argument is that the Mexican public accepts tacitly that the country can be a nation of multiple belongings, that is, North American and Latin American at the same time, and there is no need to choose one region over the other. Still, among intellectuals and public‐opinion leaders, there is a debate on whether Mexico should invest its foreign‐policy resources in North America or Latin America, and the costs and benefits of each option are evaluated.
