ON THE COVER: In a novel mode of algal colony development, small daughter colonies are being released from a large, benthic mother colony of Gazia saundersii gen. et sp. nov. (Pelagophyceae) photographed withdifferential interference contrast optics. Mother cells are sand‐dwelling and can be visible with the naked eye, containing up to 2400 cells. Ultrastructure shows each cell surrounded by a unique perforated theca thatappears to be the fi rst morphological feature to defi ne the pelagophytes. Photo credit: R. Wetherbee.
