A leaf curl disease with symptoms typical of begomoviruses was observed in bean ( P haseolus vulgaris ) at the M ain R esearch F arm of the I ndian I nstitute of P ulses R esearch, K anpur, I ndia. Infected plants had severe distortion of leaves and the plants were unproductive. PCR indicated the involvement of F rench bean leaf curl virus ( JQ 866297), a recently described B egomovirus , and T omato leaf curl G ujarat virus ( T o LCGV ). The full‐length genome of T o LCGV associated with leaf curl disease of bean was 2757 nucleotides long and had maximum identity (97–98%) with seven isolates of T o LCGV ( AY 234383, AF 449999, EU 573714, GQ 994098, AY 190290, FR 819708, AF 413671) and is designated as T omato leaf curl G ujarat virus ‐( IN : K np: B ean:2013) ( KF 440686). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first record of T o LCGV infecting a leguminous host, P. vulgaris .
