Presurgical evaluation of patients with intractable epilepsy routinely includes hemispheric language dominance (HLD) testing. Commonly, HLD is assessed by the intracarotid amobarbital (Wada) test. 1 The advent of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has generated considerable interest in this technique as an alternative to HLD testing. 2–6 Functional MRI mapping of the brain relies on the detection of focal changes in the concentrations of deoxyhemoglobin. 7
