Serum and 24 hours urinary zinc of 34 female patients (16 pregnant and 18 non‐pregnant) suffering from viral hepatitis were studied along with 23 healthy controls. Zinc estimation was done by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Serum zinc was significantly decreased in pregnancy. It was significantly depressed in viral hepatitis irrespective of pregnancy. Patients who showed features of hepatic encephalopathy had a further decrease in their serum zinc levels. Urinary zinc excretion was also increased in patients of viral hepatitis. Thus, serum zinc is lower in viral hepatitis and there is a positive correlation between decrease in serum zinc and clinical severity of viral hepatitis.
