This study was undertaken to investigate whether direct ultrasonography upon the pelvic organs during gynecologic laparotomy can offer more detailed information than routine transabdominal ultrasonography. Open Direct Ultrasonography (ODU) used in 145 gynecologic operations, gave excellent or better images in endometrial cancer, uterine sarcoma, invasive mole, submucous and intramural myoma, bicornuate uterus, interstitial ectopic pregnancy and cervical cancer. In these diseases, ODU gave very useful information for determining the appropriate surgical modality. The scan image in ODU was also often better for ovarian tumors than routine transabdominal ultrasonography.
