Front cover: Metabotropic glutamate receptor 4 (mGluR4) was recently shown to regulate neural stem / progenitor cell (NSPC) behaviors, indicating a novel strategy for enhancing the intrinsic potential for brain regeneration after injuries. In this study, we showed that mGluR4 was functionally expressed in rat subventricular zone derived NSPCs. mGluR4 activation inhibited NSPC proliferation and promoted their neuronal differentiaon. The underlying mechanism might involve the cAMP/PTEN/AKT signaling pathway. This work may highlight the tremendous possibility of mGluR4 as a drug target in neural regenerative therapy for brain injuries and for enhancing neuron generation from NSPCs. Image Content: The image shows that mGluR4 (red) co‐localizes with NSPCs marker nestin (green) in the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle, suggesting expression of mGluR4 in NSPCs from adult rat brain.Read the full article ‘Activation of metabotropic glutamate receptor 4 regulates proliferation and neural differentiation in neural stem/progenitor cells of the rat subventricular zone and increases phosphatase and tensin homolog protein expression’ by Z.
