Front cover: The HIV‐1 Tat (transactivator of transcription) protein causes rapid and significantly increased [Ca 2+ ]i in oligodendrocytes (OLs). The increased [Ca 2+ ]i injures/kills relatively immature OLs; mature OLs remain healthy. This discrepancy may relate to maturational differences in CaMKIIβ and GSK3β levels and interactions. Tat preferentially activated GSK3β in immature OLs, whose lower levels of CaMKIIβ were insufficient to limit the pro‐apoptotic signaling by GSK3β. Results suggest that increasing CaMKIIβ activity might limit OL/myelin injury associated with HIV infection. Image content: Confocal microscopy of a mature OL shows large, membranous expansions containing the OL/myelin‐specific galactolipid, sulfatide (red immunofluorescent staining). CaMKIIβ immunofluorescence (green) was seen in cell body cytoplasm and along larger processes. Areas of co‐localization (yellow) are also seen. Hoechst‐33342 signal indicates nuclei.Read the full article ‘ Adeno‐associated virus‐mediated over‐expression of CREB‐regulated transcription coactivator 1 in the hippocampal dentategyrus ameliorates lipopolysaccharide‐induced depression‐like behaviour in mice’ S.
