Front cover: Iron participates not only in various physical functions but also in pathological processes of several neurodegenerative diseases. Mitochondria, the intracellular iron pool, are extremely important for neurons. However, the question of how iron influences the mitochondrial function inneurons remains unsolved. This study shows that a large group of mitochondria‐associated proteins are altered in iron overloading neurons, resulting in decline of mitochondrial complex‐activity, initiation of apoptosis and mitochondrial fragmentation. These findings suggest iron‐induced mitochondrial dysfunction may be a putative target for prevention and treatment for neurodegeneration. Image Content: The cover image shows the morphology of mitochondria in primary rat cortical neurons. Mitochondria and nucleus werevisualized by MitoTracker Deep Red (red) and DAPI (blue), respectively.Read the full article ‘ Iron‐induced energy supply deficiency and mitochondrial fragmentation in neurons ’ by X.
