Front cover: Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability and a major contributor to healthcare costs. Despite recent progress made in the basic understanding of pain transmission and regulation, current treatments show limited efficacy and come with a host of undesirable side effects, including tolerance and addiction. Therefore, there is a need to develop new, more effective therapies without, or with less, side effects. The featured article series provides insights into the current state of research. The cover depicts cortical neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and insular cortex (IC), as well as somatosensory cortices (S1 and S2), receive nociceptive sensory inputs from the periphery through the spinal cord dorsal horn and several subcortical structures. Sensory inputs also innervate neurons in emotion related brain areas such as the amygdala. The chemical interactions between neurons and non‐neurons such as glial cells influence the process and storage of nociceptive information at different levels of the central nervous system, from the spinal cord to the brain.Read the full article ‘New mechanisms for pain: From neurons to glia; from spinal cord to cortex’ by M.
