CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing has the potential to revolutionize agriculture. Zhou et al. (269–286) focuses on recent progress in applying CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing tools to fruit crop improvement including cultivated strawberry shown. Challenges facing fruit crops as well as new platforms that could facilitate fruit crop genome editing are discussed. Transgene‐free genome editing and de novo domestication of wild relatives are some of the most exciting new development in the field. The cover photo provided by Junhui Zhou and Zhongchi Liu.
