Optimizing leaf shape is a major challenge in efforts to develop an ideal plant type. In this issue, Song et al. (1000–1014) identified a single nucleotide polymorphism within a candidate gene, Csa1M537400 , as the mutation underlying the round leaf trait in cucumber. Csa1M537400 encodes a PINOID kinase protein known to be involved in auxin transport.
