The cover shows the typical meiotic cell division in rice (upper row), comparing with the mitotic‐like metaphase and telophase in a gene‐edited meiocyte (lower row). In this issue, Xie et al. (911–916) introduced apomixis into rice by editing four genes. The quadruple mutant shows a meiosisto‐mitosis transformation and produces clonal diploid gametes. Owing to the mutation of OsMATL , the clonal gametes may develop into apomictic off spring.
