Pyruvate kinase (PK) is a key enzyme in glycolysis and carbon metabolism. In this issue, Cai et al. (1097–1118) observed that mutation in plastidic OsPKpα1 resulted in dramatic changes to both lipid and starch biosynthesis in rice endosperm. It is known before that plastidic PK plays a fundamental role in de novo fatty acid biosynthesis, the latest finding suggests a functional connection between lipid and starch synthesis.
