The physiochemical properties and concentration of nitrate in coconut water were analyzed, and thus, the associated risk for nitrate intake was estimated. The coconuts were obtained from different cities in Iran. It is shown by the results that the nitrate concentration is considerable. The mean nitrate concentration was 165 mg/L. It is necessary to take the nitrate intake from consumption of coconut water into account for the calculation of its accurate dietary intake. A significant and strong correlation was also found between the electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) measurements and the measured nitrate concentration. The results of nitrate concentration in coconuts obtained from various parts of Iran showed that the maximum concentration was about 340 mg/L.The results indicated that the average nitrate intakes from consumption of 350 and 700 ml of coconut water were about 21% and 42% of its maximum acceptable daily intake, respectively, while consumption of 350 ml of coconut water comprises about 80% of the maximum acceptable intake of the nitrate for a 20‐kg child. Novelty impact statement The physiochemical properties of coconut water. Analysis of nitrate concentration in coconut water. Calculating the nitrate associated risk from consumption of coconut water. The mean nitrate concentration was 165 mg/L, and the maximum concentration was about 340 mg/L.
