The objective of the present study was to investigate the potential of Nymphaea nouchali petal extracts for its commercial application as natural food additives. Characterization of petals extract was performed followed by its toxicity assessment using various in vitro model systems. A herbal beverage was also formulated using a combination of petal extract and green tea and was further characterized to estimate its potential as a revitalizer. NPE was revealed to be a rich source of carbohydrate, bioactive molecules, and essentials macrominerals. Sixteen components were identified via GC–MS analysis having different therapeutic uses including flavor enhancer. NPE also harbors strong antimicrobial activity against food pathogens although zilch toxicity was recorded in different model systems. Thus NPE proved to be a promising source of nutraceuticals with no toxicological consequences and thus can be popularized as an alternative source of food along with its immense application possibilities in the food industry. Novelty impact statement Nymphaea nouchali Petal Extract (NPE) can serve as a new promising source of mineral elements in human nutrition and display colossal prospective in amelioration of diseases as it enhances the dietary intake of nutrients with antioxidant properties. NPE can also serve as a natural food preservative/additive exhibiting no toxicity in various in vitro model systems and may provide low cost solutions to industries. A functional beverage formulated in our study using N. nouchali and green tea was revealed to be an excellent source of nutraceuticals that can behave as a perfect revitalizer for physiological needs.
