Cover legend: Members of the bivalve family Unionidae collected near Austin, TX, USA (pictured are species in the genera Lampsilis, Toxolasma, and Pleurobema ). Unionids are one of several lineages of bivalves with doubly uniparental inheritance of mitochondrial DNA (DUI), an unusual mode of inheritance where sex‐specific mitochondrial genomes are inherited independently in males and females. In the current issue, Maeda et al. investigated how divergent male and female mtDNAs in DUI species might manage to coevolve with the same, singular nuclear genome. See Maeda et al., (pp 1722–1736).
