The present study investigated the reproductive biology and histological study of gonads of Schizothorax plagiostomus female and its relationship with gonadosomatic index. The study period was from July, 2013 to June, 2014. Fish samples within the range of 25.5 cm to 40.33 cm in total length and weight ranging from 250 g to 580 g were used during the study. The mean GSI value of female fish fluctuated between minimum 1.059 ± 0.62 in August to maximum 14.95 ± 2.69 in May. The results showed that S. plagiostomus breeds during May, June and July confirmed by the gonadosomatic index and egg diameter measurements. The ova diameter ranged from 0.3 to 2.02 mm with minimum in July and maximum in June. The breeding status confirmed by gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian histology showed six stages of ovarian maturation (viz. stage I: chromatin nucleaolar stage; II: perinucleolar stage; III: cortical alveolar stage; IV: vitellogenic yolk stage; V: ripe mature stage; and VI: atretic stage). Results show that S. plagiostomus is a seasonal breeder with unimodal spawning activity.
