Summary The objective of this study was to detect substances of 5–15 kDa in carp seminal plasma using matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry ( MALDI ‐ TOF MS ) and to compare mass spectrometry profiles between two common carp lines. Resolved were seminal plasma proteins using tris – tricine SDS – PAGE . Also found were 19 mass spectra peaks of carp seminal plasma. A few low‐molecular mass proteins were identified, including parvalbumin, apolipoprotein, histone H 4 and H 2 A , and one hypothetical protein. Mass spectrometry was not useful for molecular profiling of carp breeding lines, but are potentially useful for comparative studies of cyprinids.
