Abstract Loyalties are shifting from the organization to the profession, but professionals need organizations to exercise their talents. As independent professionals ply their skills at multiple museums, as volunteers require more responsibility, as lines of authority blur on staff teams, and as accountability evolves, accommodating these shifts will demand a different style of decision making. In the future, museums will need to include more people in the decision‐making conversation.
