Children often fail easy reasoning tasks: how wide is the gap between success and failure? The present study found a high level of competence at picture selection to illustrate their conclusion in 6‐year‐olds who had reasoned badly, maintained over variation in natural‐language quantification, level of difficulty in picture discrimination and repeated testing. Identifying what an assertion denotes may be in advance of ability to integrate a pair of assertions. Research on reasoning needs to analyse the developmental course of both.
