David Crystal' work is an outstanding application of linguistic discipline to language handicap: linguistic symptomology must be accurately and comprehensively described. But issues which concern experimental psychology in general and developmental psychology in particular are scanted in favour of an idealization of the medical model and of the human observer. A crucial concept is missing, that of mental reality. Encounter with language handicap entails encounter with the patient' mind.
