A previously published research report (Rubino, Grasso, Sonnino & Pezzarossa, 1991 a ) is criticized by Taylor, Bagby & Parker (1993) on several grounds, and further data are cited to contrast our negative conclusions on one of the basic postulates of alexithymia research, i.e. the opposition, or at least independence between alexithymia and neurotic functioning. The theoretical and empirical arguments of Taylor et al. are closely examined, and it is concluded that alexithymia seems positively correlated not only with neurotic and psychotic conditions, but also with neuroticism.
