Over a seven‐month period all patients with non‐psychotic disorders admitted to an acute psychiatric unit were surveyed concerning the kind of help they wished to obtain during their stay. At discharge, ratings of the amount of help received in the various categories were obtained. It was found that, on admission, patients gave high priority to a number of psychological treatment requests and that, on discharge, they saw these as having been relatively less well provided for. Shifts from passive forms of help to those requiring more active participation during the course of hospitalization were also noted.
