In 1879 by putting a taboo upon anything other than experimentation, psychology lost its independence from philosophical speculation at the very moment it declared it ‐ for it lumbered itself with a speculative philosophy which, though long since outmoded, has remained unchanged through remaining unexamined (Shotter, 1975, p. 40). Labouring the difference between science and the humanities has long been a fashion, and has become a bore (Popper, 1972, p. 185).
