A review of the literature on the phenomenon of the double is presented. The reasons for the use of the term heautoscopy instead of the more widely used autoscopy are given. The phenomenological characteristics of the phenomenon differentiate heutoscopic depersonalization from heautoscopic delusion. A case of the former is reported and an example of the delusional form is quoted.
