In the study of psychodynamic psychotherapy few attempts have been made to operationalize and quantify constructs derived from psychoanalytic theory. This study operationalizes the phenomena of impulse, anxiety and defence as they appear in therapist interpretative statements. It extends D. Malan's work in this area and uses his original data.
