Basic assumptions and values implicit in the move to improve the quality of working life are outlined. Four major groups of criticisms of these assumptions and values are discussed at length, some being considered of strong weight and some nugatory. The significance of the quality of working life movement is then considered and the growth and diffusion of this approach on the international scene is assessed. Finally, some of the problems for the future are reviewed from the perspective of the various relevant disciplines.
