An exact procedure is developed for testing directional hypotheses concerning pairwise differences between category probabilities when the data can be considered a sample from a multinomial distribution. The procedure is illustrated in the case of three and four categories, and is compared with the exact test of the hypothesis of equal category probabilities proposed by Chapanis and modified by Gridgman.
