It is suggested that the proportion of examination candidates who are wrongly graded may be estimated from the examination reliability coefficient by the bivariate normal integral. As an illustration estimates of this proportion are calculated for the present G.C.E. A level grading system over a range of values of the reliability coefficient. Some alternative grading schemes are examined.
