Operating within the framework of the theory of generalizability, the main objective of the investigation was that of empirically studying the effect of item difficulty and item content stratification on the gamma coefficients using an unmatched item design. The principal results were as follows: ( a ) the reliability of an unstratified test using the unmatched item design was found to be lower than the reliability of a comparable test using the matched item design, and ( b ) stratification on item difficulty was found to be an extremely important factor in the unmatched item design. These and other results obtained on the gamma coefficients were contrasted with previously reported results for the alpha coefficients involving a matched item design.
