Principal axis factor analysis and LISREL were used to test the hypothesis that moral stages form ‘structured wholes’. The data analysed come from a new study of male and female students from three racial groups and also from Colby, Kohlberg, Gibbs & Lieberman's (1983) longitudinal study of moral judgement. These analyses supported the structural‐wholeness hypothesis.
