The seven contestants at the first World Memory Championships and three other subjects showing outstanding memory performance were administered a battery of memory tasks used in previous studies of superior memory performance. Evidence for both all‐round and more specific patterns of superior performance was found. The role of mnemonic techniques in relation to different types of task is discussed but evidence was also found for ‘natural’ superior memory, indicated by superior performance without the use of techniques, good incidental long‐term retention, and reported superior memory ability in close relatives. An attempt to distinguish ‘natural’ from strategic memorizers was explored, based on these criteria and on differential patterns of performance on tasks suited and unsuited to the application of mnemonic techniques.
