An experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of noise on recall of order using a running memory task. When five items had to be recalled noise improved recall for all items except the last one, whereas when eight items had to be recalled noise improved recall of the last two items but impaired recall of others. This supports the view that the storage load may be very important in determining the effects of noise on memory. However, the storage load also changes the way in which the task is carried out and it is, at present, unclear whether the noise effect depends on the storage load or whether it depends on the strategy used to do the task, which may be determined by factors such as the memory load.
