Forster & Grierson (1978) have reported a lack of success in replicating the essential findings of the experiments of Hockey (1970 a, b ). The present paper indicates a number of methodological differences between the two sets of studies, and suggests that the problems caused by these are complicated by an unnecessarily narrow interpretation of the attentional selectivity hypothesis.
