Children whose spelling retardation is associated with reading retardation differ from children with retardation in spelling alone in the ways in which they tend to misspell words, suggesting that there are different reasons for these misspellings. The results imply that underlying at least some cases of spelling plus reading retardation is a more generalized language deficiency, but the mechanism(s) underlying the spelling‐only retardation remains unclear.
