Acquisition, reversal, adaptation and inhibition of the orienting response were investigated in a mentally retarded sample and its CA and MA matched normal groups. GSR frequency, magnitude and latency were used as indices of the OR. The retarded subjects maintained and modified their ORs as efficiently as the normals during acquisition and reversal. OR decrements to non‐signals and to former signals were distinguished as adaptation v. inhibition.
