Hooded rats were habituated to one arm and the stem of a T‐maze while being able to observe the other arm through a glass door (one arm was black and the other white). In a subsequent free choice trial when both arms were of similar albedo to the habituated arm fewer shocked than unshocked rats chose the novel arm. During an observation period following initial choice it was found that shocked rats spent significantly more time in the habituated arm.
