It has been reported that the salivary response of subjects to lemon juice is correlated with their degree of extraversion, and that this ‘lemon test’ is more satisfactory than questionnaires for measuring extraversion, since subjects cannot simulate as they can with questionnaires. In order to test the validity of this second claim, an experiment was carried out in which subjects were asked to control their salivation. It was found that subjects could control their rate of salivation and present themselves as ‘introverts’ or ‘extraverts’.
