An outline of a field theory for visual illusions is proposed. The main components of the theory are two kinds of interaction functions: an attraction function, effective over empty distance, and an attraction‐repulsion function, effective within filled distance. The theory is tested in some experiments and is discussed in the context of some well‐known illusions.
