A quantitative assessment of 64 scholastic, intelligence, personality and motivational variables was carried out on a group of students who were in their first year at university. The main purpose of the investigation was the assessment of the relationship between non‐cognitive parameters and performance in university examinations compared with cognitive and scholastic antecedents. The results indicate that the predictors most frequently used by university selectors are as imperfect as was feared, and that personality and motivational variables have statistically significant relationships with the examination criterion.
