Perceptual contrast has been traditionally demonstrated with stimulus attributes involving size, perspective, or brightness of given stimulus objects. The present investigation aims to examine the operation of perceptual contrast in such qualitative dimensions as geometric stability, symmetry, or general design quality of a stimulus. The results show that the stimulus figure, a square, was perceived as geometrically more perfect when presented in a disordered and unstable context as compared with an ordered and stable one.
