This paper completes the report on the stroboscopic patterns. In two previous papers in this Journal (Smythies, 1959 a, b ) an account was given of the phenomenology of the dark and bright phases of the stroboscopic patterns—the subjective sensory patterns evoked by illuminating the retina with an intermittent stimulus. This paper reports some further experiments that explore the parameters that affect these patterns and a discussion is presented of the various hypotheses that have been advanced as to their origin.
